Market hog inventories are projected to remain below a year earlier through nextspring based on September 1 farrowing intentions. This will be followed by a projected increase of 4 to 5 percent for the summer and fall quarters. First half 1996 hog slaughter will remain large compared to any period prior to 1994, and many producers will barely cover cash operating expenses due to projected higher feed prices unless cash hogs remain in the mid $40's per cwt or higher. However, mid-October futures prices for corn, soybeans and hogs continue to offer a profitable hedging opportunity that may temper some of the downside price risk.
