U.S. market hog inventories were the largest on record on March 1, 1995. Hogs inthe heaviest weight group, 180 pounds and over, were up 4 percent from a year earlier, and led to record barrow and glit slaughter in March, 13 percent above the previous 5-year average. Pork production over the next two quarters will continue at a record pace, but year-over-year increases are expected to fall sharply from the 7-percent increase reported in the first quarter.
