National Cholesterol Education Program. Recommendations on LipoproteinMeasurement. From the Working Group on Lipoprotein Measurement

Elevation of low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol constitutes a major riskfactor for the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). In humans, LDL carries most of the circulating cholesterol concentration provides a useful surrogate indicator of LDL-cholesterol concentration. It is necessary in the diagnosis and treatment of hyperlipidemia, however, to assess the distribution of cholesterol amoung the major plasma lipoproteins, particulary LDL and high density lipoproteins (HDL). The working group's recommendation for LDL-cholesterol measurement are summarized in this paper along with some of the issues that the group considered in developing the recommendations.
