摘要

Recent investigations have demonstrated that many hydrocarbons and chlorinatedhydrocarbons can be mineralized in-situ by the introduction of appropriate nutrients into the contaminated groundwater. Considerable attention is now being given to developing bacteria with specialized degradative capabilities by selective enrichment techniques and genetic manipulation with the idea that these non-indigenous bacteria could be introduced by injection into the groundwater to initiate contaminant biodegradation. To address this need, a study was funded by the United States Geological Survey at the University at Buffalo. This report summarizes the work presented in the theses, two of which have been previously submitted to United States Geological Survey. For each thesis, the objectives, approach, and major findings as they relate to the goals of this research project are summarized in the report. Full details of the experimental and/or modeling studies conducted can be found in the respective theses which serve as appendices to this report.
