Investigations on the Production, Characterization and Application of TwoMicrobial Lipases and a Novel Esterase

Microbial lipases are often perceived by scientists as one of the most importantclass of industrial enzymes. However, as compared with other hydrolytic enzymes, the industrial use of lipases is only one tenth of proteases and carbohydrases. The annual market of lipases accounts at present for only about 4% of the total world-wide enzyme market. This is due to the limitation of the availability of lipases possessing satisfactory characteristics. For example, a thermostable alkaline lipase is needed in industrial application for fat splitting and detergent uses. On the other hand, lipases (as well as esterases) have a valuable ability to discriminate between enantiomers of racemic substrates in syntheses. In the present work an extensive microbial screening was carried out to find microorganisms which are characterized as producers of industrially suitable lipases.
