Market Disposition of High-Efficiency Water Heating Equipment

Primary energy consumption for service (potable) water heating in residential andcommercial buildings is approximately 3.08 quads annually, or about 10 percent of the total residential and commercial primary energy consumption. If currently installed water heaters were replaced with currently, commercially available, high-efficiency water heaters, primary energy consumption for this end-use function could be reduced by about half, saving consumers and commercial sector end users more than $10 billion per year in energy costs. Advanced water heating technologies have the potential to reduce primary energy consumption by about two-thirds. This Water Heater Market Disposition Study has been undertaken to assess the economic barriers and other market barriers to high-efficiency water heating and to identify DOE actions that could increase the market penetration and use of high-efficiency water heaters.
