The most important statement the Clinton Administration will make on the future211u001eof the Nations transportation system will be our proposal for the reauthorization 211u001eof the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). DOT intends to 211u001esubmit legislation to the Congress in early 1997. To help us prepare that 211u001eproposal, the U.S. Department of Transportation conducted a national outreach 211u001eprogram to gather citizen input at the State and local levels. We held regional 211u001eForums in every section of the country and convened over one hundred focus groups 211u001ein 40 States. This Administration believes that we are here to serve our 211u001ecustomers and listen carefully to their views. This report provides a summary of 211u001ethe major themes highlighted by participants during this outreach and is intended 211u001eto serve as a resource during consideration of ISTEAs reauthorization.
