The Organic Chemicals Inc. (OCI) property is located at 3291 Chicago Drive, S.W.,in the city of Grandville, Kent County, Michigan. A Preliminary Assessment (PA) for the Site was completed by EPA in 1983. The PA documented potential groundwater contamination from the solvent-contaminated seepage lagoon. Soil beneath this pond were also found to be contaminated. A potential for drinking water contamination and endangerment of flora and fauna in nearby potential wetlands was indicated in the PA. Analyses taken from solid waste storage units (rolloffs and 55 gallon drums) located at the Site revealed the presence of various contaminants including methylene chloride, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and arochlor 1242 polychlorinated bi-phenyls(PCBs). Analyses of soil samples taken from the vicinity of the solid waste storage units revealed the presence of methylene chloride, toluene, xylenes, 1,1,1-trichlorooethne, trichloroethene, tetrachloroethene, chloroform, 1,1-dichloroethene, 1,2-dichloroethene, and Arochlor 1242 (PCBs). Site 3 of OU NO. 3, also known as the Walton Walker Property, encompasses approximately 130 acres of privately-owned property, where three (3) separate municipal landfills were operated by the City of Dallas from the mid-1960s through the later 1970s and early 1980s. The major components of the selected remedy includes: excavation and removal of slag, battery chips, metals contaminated soils and sediments exceeding cleanup goals (up to two feet); off-site disposal of excavated material in an appropriate landfill; no action of the Ground Water Portion; and containment (protective cap) of portions of the landfill where there is exposed slag, battery chips, and metals-contaminated soil exceeding cleanup goals.
