Formulating Strategies Economic Development: Metropolitan Economic Development Series.

Metropolitan economic development is a relatively new area for most metropolitan councils. During the 1970's, metropolitan planning agencies became increasingly cognizant of the economic issues arising out of regional programs in environmental management, housing, transportation, and land use development. This stemmed in part from the results of sophisticated statistical analyses done in conjunction with other regional programs. It was also due to increased communication with the private sector. Consequently, several agencies began activities which gave an economic dimension to their programs. Most of the work done during the 1970's in the area of metropolitan economic development was accomplished without federal funds. Although the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) had an active planning assistance program in urban areas, such funds went directly to cities and urban counties.
