An overview is provided of some of the basic facts concerning rim hook lattices211u001eand ribbon tableaux, using a prepresentations of a partitions by their edge 211u001esequences. An action is defined of the affine Coxeter group of type A(sub r-1) on 211u001ethe r-rim hook lattice, and thereby on the sets of standard and semistandard r-211u001eribbon tableaux, and this action is related to the concept of chains in r-ribbon 211u001etableaux.
