Sustainable forest management is a global issue of increasing importance. As part211u001eof an effort to evaluate sustainable forest management alternatives for the 211u001eTapajos National Forest (TNF) in Para, Brazil, IBAMA (The Brazilian Institute for 211u001eEnvironment and Renewable Natural Resources) requested the U.S. Department of 211u001eAgriculture (USDA) Forest Service, in collaboration with the U.S. Agency for 211u001eInternational Development, to assess the ecotourism potential of the TNF. An 211u001einitial visit and tourism assessment was undertaken (Lennon, Wetterberg, 211u001eBurchfield and da Silva 1994). The research reported here is a more in-depth 211u001efollow-up to the earlier U.S. Forest Service report. Section I establishes the 211u001econtext for the analysis. The status of conservation areas and the multiple use 211u001emandate for national forests in Brazil is reviewed. Recent tourism trends in the 211u001eBrazilian Amazon are summarized in Section II. Section III presents an analysis 211u001eof the potential demand for visits to the TNF based on a tourist survey. 211u001eConclusions are discussed in Section IV.
