Safety Performance Evaluation of the MELT2 Terminal Using an 820C Vehicle; FOILTest Numbers 96FO25 and 96FO26. Resource Materials

This report contains the results from two high-speed crash tests conducted at theFederal Outdoor Impact Laboratory (FOIL) located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, Virginia. These tests were conducted as part of a larger test matrix to certify an updates version of the metric or circular modified eccentric loader terminal (metric-MELT) known as the MELT2 terminal to the safety performance criteria outlined in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report Number 350 (NCHRP Report 350). The test conducted were test designations 3-34 and 3-32 as described in NCHRP Report 350. The vehicle used as the 820C vehicle described in NCHEP Report 350 was the Ford Festiva two-door hatch back. The results show that the MELT2 meets all the safety performance criteria specified by NCHRP 350 for test 3-34 and 3-32. Results from the tests are presented as test summaries of data, graphs of data from the transducers affixed to the vehicles, and photographs taken before, during, and after the tests.
