The overall goal of this portion of the project was to package one or more unit211u001eprocesses, as modular components in vertical and/or horizontal recirculation 211u001ewells, for treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (e.g., trichloroethene 211u001e(TCE)) and radionuclides (e.g., technetium (Tc-99)) in groundwater. A major 211u001ecomponent of the project was the development of modules that provide simultaneous 211u001etreatment of hydrocarbons and radionuclides. The project was a 3 1/2-year effort 211u001ethat included screening, modeling, laboratory experimentation, and field 211u001edemonstration. The project objectives incluced: (1) evaluation of horizontal 211u001ewells for inducing groundwater recirculation, (2) development of below-ground 211u001etreatment modules for simultaneous removal of VOCs and radionuclides, and (3) 211u001edemonstration of a coupled system (treatment module with recirculation well) at a 211u001eDOE field site where both VOCs and radionuclides are present in the groundwater.
