District of Columbia: Extent to Which Schools Receive Available Federal Education211 Grants

The federal government provides funds for hundreds of education programs of which211u001e103 are available for preschool, elementary, and secondary education. Most of 211u001ethese are administered by the Department of Education, although 12 other agencies 211u001ealso offer such programs. The biggest of these programs, outside Education, are 211u001ethe school nutrition programs administered by the Department of Agriculture and 211u001ethe Head Start program administered by the Department of Health and Human 211u001eServices. Concern has been voiced in congressional hearings and the press about 211u001ehow well the District of Columbia Public-Schools (DCPS) have taken advantage of 211u001eavailable federal education dollars.
