Simulation of the Railway Component of Intermodal Transportation

In this report, the authors describe a detailed research model for the railway211u001ecomponent of intermodal trucking operations, using discrete event system 211u001esimulation. Emphasis is placed on strategic issues including railhead location 211u001eanalysis in multi-facility settings and product mix analysis (container versus 211u001etrailer) by railhead within rail networks. The research models developed herein 211u001efocus on the effects of railhead location and mix on drayage efficiency relative 211u001eto shipment density profiles provided by BNSF Railway in the Chicago, IL area. 211u001eThe research advances the state of the art in intermodal simulaton modeling 211u001ethrough concurrent consideration of multiple-terminal network design and terminal 211u001eactivities such as hostling and train building.
