Initial Oxidation of Iron and Iron Nitride.

摘要

Iron nitride layers on low alloyed steels are of interest because they improve their performance with respect to wear, fatigue and corrosion. Subjecting a nitrided workpiece to an oxidation treatment brings about an iron-oxide layer at the surface, which can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance, in contrast with iron-oxide layers on iron/steel, which usually blister and spall. To improve understanding of the influence of nitrogen on iron-oxide growth on iron and on iron nitride, in the present work the oxidation of a-Fe and e-fe2N1-x was investigated.
