Experience Report: Comparing an Automated Conformance Test Development Approachwith a Traditional Development Approach

This paper describes a project at the National Institute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) that investigated the effectiveness of using automated software test generation methods to help develop conformance tests for implementations of specifications of software standards. Recently, several technologies that automate parts of the software test development process have appeared. This paper describes a case study that compared the use of a particular automated method (the Assertion Defintion Language (ADL), developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc.) to develop conformance tests, compared with the use of traditional methods, when both methods were applied to the same standard software specifications.
