The apparatus under development in this project is a structural component or beam211u001efabricated from a fiber reinforced composite (FRPC). The FRPC beam is a 211u001estructural repair component intended to bridge a deteriorated thermal crack in 211u001efull depth bituminous pavements or partial depth bituminous pavements over 211u001eportland cement concrete. The bridging action provided by the FRPC beam is 211u001eintended to minimize roughness through the repaired area for up to five years, 211u001eeliminate reappearance of the deteriorated crack, and provide a controlled 211u001eexpansion crack that can be treated with standard sealing techiques. The 211u001eapparatus is designed for maintenance use as a field expedient, semi-permanent 211u001erepair using tools that are commonly available at the Area Maintenance level. 211u001eThree FRPC beams were constructed for field trial in a thermally cracked, fully 211u001ebituminous pavement on US-36 east of Hiawatha, Kansas. Each of the beams were 211u001einstrumeted with bonded metal foil strain gages and field installation by KDOT 211u001emaintenance forces was done in August and September of 1997. The FRPC beams have 211u001ebeen evaluated since intallation and this evaluation will continue for up to five 211u001eyears from the date of installation. Evaluation of the beams has been 211u001eaccomplished through static load tests using the stain gage instrumentation and 211u001eFalling Weight Deflectometer measurements. The FRPC beams have performed 211u001esatisfactorily as of the date of writing.
