How Access Benefits Children: Connecting Our Kids to the World of Information

The report describes how our first digital generation is learning, playing,211u001eworking, communicating, and becoming consumers. This new generation approaches 211u001einformation technologies differently. Recent research suggests that while many 211u001eadults are adopting the Internet, young people are internalizing it. The 211u001edistinction is significant: adults add Web use to their pre-existing routines and 211u001ebheaviors, while for many children, the Internet is fully integrated into their 211u001elives and affects the way they think. The report examines some of the benefits 211u001esuch access brings,not only to children and youth, but to their entire 211u001ecommunities. These TIIAP-funded projects are demonstrating how access to the 211u001eInternet creates opportunities to tap the creativity of children and youth, to 211u001enurture their artistic talents, to engage them in civic enterprises, and to 211u001ecreate bonds across generations.
