This investigator proposes to evaluate a comprehensive intervention designed to211u001eimprove emergency department's staff's response to battered women. The program 211u001econsists of a training manual, model policies and procedures, resource materials 211u001esuch as checklists and standard forms, and strategies for inservice education and 211u001efor creating a 'culture' in the emergency department that is responsive to the 211u001eneeds of battered women, as well as to the reality of busy emergency departments. 211u001eThe evaluation proposed consists of a randomized trial of the intervention in 211u001ethree test and three control emergency departments in each of two states, 211u001eCalifornia and Pennsylvania. Data collection will occur at three points: 211u001epreintervention, postintervention, and at 12 months followup. Data collection 211u001eincludes four elements: (1) staff attitudinal survey; (2) assessment of emergency 211u001edepartment 'culture'; (3) patient abuse screen and satisfaction survey; (4) 211u001emedical record review.
