Evaluation of the Benefits of Automated Vehicle Location Systems in Small and211 Medium Sized Transit Agencies

The study addresses the issue of Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) applications in211u001esmall and medium sized transit agencies. Small to medium transit agencies were 211u001econtacted to determine their perception of their experience with AVL and the 211u001ebenefits it has provided. All contacted transit agencies that deployed AVL system 211u001eperceive great benefits of AVL, especially in the areas of improved efficiency of 211u001ethe system by permitting automated dispatch and scheduling, improved customer 211u001eservices and communication, more efficient use of resources and improved on-time 211u001eperformance. In addition, a survey was conducted of transit users in a Wisconsin 211u001ecommunity to assess the level of importance that they place on features of 211u001etransit service which AVL can affect. A framework for conducting benefits costs 211u001eanalysis is also provided based on data from the City of Racine, Wisconsin and 211u001esome assumptions.
