Statistics of U.S. Businesses: Microdata and Tables. SBA/Census Data on211 Establishments by Firm Size

This document discusses the creation of the Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB)211u001efrom the Bureau of the Census, SUSB is an annual firm size database containing 211u001einformation on firms, establishments, employment, payroll, and estimated 211u001ereceipts, along with their industries and location (states and metropootan 211u001estatistical areas). The office of Advocacy within the U.S. Small Business 211u001eAdministration funds the Bureau of the Census to construct SUSB. To construct 211u001eSUSB, Census uses it's business registry or Standard Statistical Establishment 211u001eList as a basis, utilizes edits from County Business Patterns (an establishment 211u001edata source), and aggregates establishments owned by a parent company to create 211u001efirm size data. In addition, Census has created the Longitudinal Establishment 211u001eand Enterprise Microdata (LEEM). With the LEEM, researchers can track businesses 211u001eover time and create dynamic data. The document also discusses the uses of static 211u001edata (comparing snapshots of data for different time periods) and dynamic data 211u001e(tracking data over time and comparing starting and end points). SUSB covers all 211u001eU.S. business establishments with employees, except for farms, railroads and 211u001ehouseholds.
