The increasing popularity of dining out over the past two decades has raised the211u001eproportion of nutrients obtained from away-from-home food sources. Between 1977 211u001eand 1995, home foods significantly improved their nutritional quality, more so 211u001ethan away-from-home foods, which typically contained more of the nutrients 211u001eoverconsumed (fat and saturated fat) and less of the nutrients underconsumed 211u001e(calcium, fiber, and iron) by Americans. Since the trend of eating out frequently 211u001eis expected to continue, strategies to improve the American diet must address 211u001econsumers' food choices when eating out.
