The detection performance of an or-ing device with pre-averaging and post-211u001eaveraging has been determined in the form of numerous receiver operating 211u001echaracteristics covering a wide range of input signal-to-noise ratios. Numerical 211u001eevaluation of the false alarm probability P(sub f) and detection probability 211u001eP(sub d) has been conducted for the case of a random Guassian signal in the 211u001epresence of additive Guassian noise, for a wide range of values of K, the amoung 211u001eof the pre-averaging before or-ing; N, the number of channels or-ed; and M, the 211u001eamount of post-averaging after or-ing. Also, a MATLAB program is listed that can 211u001ebe used to extend these results to parameter values outside the range studied 211u001ehere. The tradeoffs associated with switching from post-averaging to pre-211u001eaveraging, or vice-versa, have been thoroughly investigated and tabulated for a 211u001estandard operating point P(sub f) = 1E-3, P(sub d) = 0.5, and for a high-quality 211u001eoperating point P(sub f) = 1E-6, P(sub d) = 0.9. The losses associated with doing 211u001etoo little pre-averaging can be severe, especially for large numbers, N, or or-ed 211u001echannels.
