Marine reflection-seismic and bottom-penetrating sonar data are routinely collected by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) for seabed classification and mapping of sediment interfaces. Emphasis is traditionally given to qualitative interpretations and descriptions. In this report, the authors investigate whether supplementary quantitative information on sediment parameters etc. can be acquired simultaneously. It is found that bottom-penetrating sonar data, with a dominating source frequency of some seven kHz, can be used for determination of roughness and impedance using the recently developed FARIM (Frequency Analysis based Roughness and Impedance estimation Method) technique by Berntsen. After a careful calibration of the system, including the beam pattern of the bottom-penetrating sonar source, it should be fairly straight-forward to implement FARIM for routine use in this context.
