The mechanical behavior of trusses, beams, arches, plates, shells, and otherrelatively thin three dimensional structures, is usually described by a set of one or two dimensional reduced elasticity equations. The equations involve numerical parameters, thicknesses, which have to be assumed small with respect to the other dimensions of the structure. Otherwise, a full three-dimensional analysis is more natural. The reduced formulations can then be viewed as penalized or regularized approximations of the limit problems which result in by letting the thicknesses approach zero. The thesis deals with the finite element solution of plate bending problems.
