In the study, acidic fibroblast growth factor incorporated into an adhesivefibrin scaffold and systematically administered human growth hormone will be used to speed up the tissue regeneration in the different types of wounds found in burn patients. In addition, the validity and reliability of five noninvasive analysis techniques for clinical assessment of skin graft, donor site, and partial thickness wound healing in burned patients will be assessed. The best healing analysis techniques (quantitative area measurement by image analysis, thermogrpahic imaging, scanning, laser Doppler, transuctaneous gas measurement, in situe mechanical testing, or standard physician observation) will be carried forward to the clinical trials. Forty patients will be randomized into two groups. Half of the patients will receive growth hormone while half will receive a placebo. Within each of these treatment groups, each patient will have three full-thickness burns treated: one with a porous fibrin matrix, one a porous fibrin matrix with incorporated FGF-1; and one a standard sutured control. The goal is to improve the outcome and decrease the costs of burn healting by using both systemic and locally applied biochemical factors and a porous tissue adhesive for skin grafting.
