This report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality presentsestimates of total nursing home expenses during 1996. Data are derived from the 1996 Nursing Home Component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Separate estimates are presented for mean expenses per person and per day. The distribution of sources of payment is shown by demographic, financial, and health status characteristics of nursing home users. Differences in expenses by selected personal characteristics are discussed. Expenses for different types of nursing homes are also shown.
