摘要

The Health Care and Social Assistance sector (sector 62) of the 1997 Economic Census comprises establishments providinghealth care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providingmedical care exclusively, continuingwith those providinghealth care and social assistance, and finally finishingwith those providingonly social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. All industries in the sector share this commonality of process, namely, labor inputs of health practitioners or social workers with the requisite expertise. Many of the industries in the sector are defined based on the educational degree held by the practitioners included in the industry. Excluded from this sector are aerobic classes in Subsector 713, Amusement, Gamblingand Recreation Industries and nonmedical diet and weight reducing centers in Subsector 812, Personal and Laundry Services. Although these can be viewed as health services, these services are not typically delivered by health practitioners. Data for this sector are shown for establishments of firms subject to Federal income tax and separately of firms which are exempt from Federal income tax under provisions of the Internal Revenue Code. Many of the kinds of business or operation included in this sector are not thought of as commercial businesses and the terms (such as business, establishment, and firm) used to describe them may not be descriptive of such services. However, these terms are applied to all kinds of business or operation in order to maintain conformity in the measures of the production and delivery of goods and services and in the presentation of data. The basic tabulations for this sector do not include data for establishments which are auxiliary (primary function is providinga service, such as warehousingor bookkeeping) to service establishments within the same organization. Data for auxiliaries are presented separately.
