Analyses using ANSYS and LS-DYNA were used to evaluate a study performed by an FHWA contractor of the stresses caused by roll-overs in roll-over protection structures (ROPS) and the adjacent shells and ring-stiffeners structures of cargo tank motor vehicles. It was found that the work done by the contractor adequately represented the accident stresses and deflections. Hand calculations using the guidance of Appendix G of Section VIII, Division 1 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code also verified the results of the static loads to the ROPS, and the validity of the loads and the assumptions regarding their distribution are questionable.
