The primary aim of this work was to determine the manufacturability and experimental performance of a conceptual design for a filament wound bridge superstructure. Before the construction industry can be expected to invest in the development of this structural system necessary to produce fully functioning structures, the manufacturing process and theoretical predictions must be verified by building and testing some small scale prototypes. The primary objectives of this research project were therefore to: 1. Build a small number of scaled prototypes to demonstrate the feasibility of the manufacturing procedure; 2. Test the prototypes to measure their stiffness, strength, and fatigue properties; 3. Build finite element models of the fabricated specimens to determine if their structural properties can be predicted. The report is organized in the following manner. Section 2 summarizes relevant work by other researchers and discusses the features of the conceptual design. Section 3 described the procedures that were adopted to produce the specifications for the small-scale prototypes that were manufactured and tested. The design of the fabrication equipment is documented in Section 4. The manufacturing process is described in Section 5. The experimental equipment used to test the structural performance of the prototype bridges is described in Section 6. Section 7 contains the experimental data obtained using this equipment. Section 8 presents the results of finite element simulations of the manufactured prototypes. The results of this research project are discussed in Section 9.
