Academic Performance and Youth Substance Use. The NHSDA Report

National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) asks respondents aged 12 or older to report use of alcohol, cigarettes, or any illicit drug during the month prior to the survey. Any illicit drug refers to marijuana/ hashish, cocaine (including crack), inhalants, hallucinogens, heroin, or prescription-type drugs used nonmedically. Youths aged 12 to 17 who reported being enrolled in school during the past year were asked about their average grades in school for the last semester or grading period completed. Youths were also asked about their participation in youth activities during the past year.
