摘要

Mentoring creates a relationship between caring adults and youth. A mentor provides support and guidance for a child or youth in his or her personal, academic, and other areas of life. As a public policy tool, mentoring is a positive youth intervention that reduces risky and negative behaviors. In 1997, the California Research Bureau (CRB) reviewed the research evaluation literature on mentoring and found that mentoring programs were moderately successful in improving academic performance and contributing to the wellbeing of children and youth. Since that time, mentoring has grown in popularity and is widely accepted as a valuable support for at-risk children and youth. An estimated 2,300 mentoring programs are serving children and youth throughout the State. Seventy-two percent of more than 1,000 California adults surveyed in 1997 said that they would be willing to pay more in taxes for mentoring programs. Close to 60% of more than 1,600 adults responding to a 2000 survey felt that mentoring programs are a very effective investment in reducing youth violence and other youth problems and would like to see the number of programs increased. This CRB report examines the research literature evaluating the effectiveness of mentoring programs during the past five years.
