The present invention provides substantially pure integrins containing a novel B subunit designated as beta(sub 6). The novel beta(sub 6) subunit forms weterodimers with alpha(sub v) and alpha(sub f). Methods of controlling cell adhesion using the beta(sub 6)-containing integrins are also provided.
