Preventing Childhood Injury with an Interactive Web Site

This final report describes the product-development and evaluation process that we applied during this six-month, SBIR Phase I project, the results of that evaluative process, and our recommendations for further development of the product. The overall purpose of this Phase I project was to create a prototype interactive Web site to teach bicycle, passenger, and pedestrian safety to primary-school-aged children. The intended target population was children 7 to 12 years of age and their parents and teachers. Specifically, we sought to: (1) create a prototype interactive Web site with companion print materials; (2) conduct formative and process evaluations of the prototype using a qualitative, iterative process (i.e. serial focus groups and in-depth interviews) with children, parents, and school personnel; and (3) identify the elements of an experimental design in preparation for the planned quantitative comparative study in Phase II.
