Environmental Assessment: Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters/Visitor Center Building

On November 10, 2006, the Refuges administrative headquarters was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin. The proposed new facilities are needed since the Refuge is currently using a leased trailer (624 square feet) that provides inadequate space for staff operations. The leased trailer provides only 33 square feet of space for welcoming and orienting Refuge visitors. A permanent office and visitor center has been a long-term goal for the Refuge. The facility would also provide office and field operations space for FWS Ecological Service staff, facilitating their efforts in partnering with private landowners on Maui regarding habitat and wildlife conservation activities.
