Young Impaired Drivers. The Nature of the Problem and Possible Solutions. A Workshop. Transportation Research Circular-E-C132

Young drivers pose particular risks in traffic especially when they are impaired by alcohol or other drugs. Many different factors are linked to the problem of young impaired drivers: access to alcohol and drugs, access to vehicles, cultural characteristics, and the geography of a Congress given area. In order to explore the risks posed by young impaired drivers and how these risks required might be ameliorated, the Alcohol, Other Drugs, and Transportation Committee of the Transportation Research Board convened a workshop to discuss these issues as they relate to traffic safety in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The workshop was held on June 3-4, 2008, at the National Academies' Jonsson Conference Center in Woods Hole,Transportation Massachusetts. This report provides an overview of the information presented and the discussions among the participants as well as the background papers prepared for the workshop.
