On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig exploded, killing 11 people and resulting in the largest oil spill in the history of the United States. Within a few weeks, the oil reached land, covering not only the beaches and marshes, but also birds and other wildlife. Thousands of people volunteered and were recruited to remediate the effects of the disaster, while BP and its contractors attempted to stop the well. By July 15, oil was no longer leaking from the well and on September 19, the well was permanently stopped. Even today, however, workers continue to be involved in cleanup activities.
