The Bacteriological Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Diagnosis of active pulmonary disease by bacteriological methods is discussed. Because the finding of tubercle bacilli is a clear diagnosis, the use of this technique should be emphasized more heavily than had been done previously. The diagnostic significance of bacteriologic findings, both positive and negative, is described. Bacteriologic methods are evaluated, and the technique of culturing tubercle bacilli from sputum and gastric contents is detailed. The collection, concentration, and culturing of specimens and various culture mediums for growing tubercle bacilli from contaminated material are described.
