The Care and Treatment of the Psychotic Patient with Tuberculosis

This technical bulletin describes the VA's policies regarding the psychotic patient with tuberculosis. These patients are treated in 13 centers throughout the country, located primarily in VA psychiatric hospitals. Each center has its own x-ray unit, dental clinic, minor surgery clinic, corrective and occupational therapy clinics, recreational facilities, and canteen. Discussions are devoted to center staffing, staff training, and detection of tuberculosis in the general patient population. Treatment and laboratory procedures are explained. Nursing procedures and techniques and dental and dietetic care are outlined, and the physical medicine and rehabilitation regimes utilized in the centers are described. Also discussed are special services such as library and recreation, social services, family education, and procedures for handling visitors. The report concludes with a discussion of special techniques for the post-mortem examination.
