In accordance with the contract, there were two lines made of optical grade quartz and one of commercial grade quartz. The characteristics of all three lines compared closely as far as attenuation, bandwidth, and spurious level were concerned. Moreover, it was found that the spurious patterns of all three were similar to each other, as well as to a proportion¬ately smaller line (1640 microseconds) of the same MS-Ⅱ design. Finally, two lines of a completely different configuration from the MS-Ⅱ and of the two types of quartz also showed spurious patterns similar to each other. On the basis of the above it was concluded that there is little or no difference in acoustic transmission in the two types of fused quartz used in the manufacture of the 2500 microsecond delay line.
