Investigation of the Effect of Shot Peening on the Fatigue Life of Torsion Bar Springs

Fifty-two torsion bar springs 0.585 inches diameter with an active length of 28 inches were manufactured, preset"to 124 degrees (.0226 radians strain), and fatigue tested at an angle of 5 degrees to 75 degrees or a nominal stress range of 10,000 to 150,000 psi. Information was obtained on the "effects of lathe turned and ground finishes prior to shot peening and shot peening intensities ranging from arc heights of .011"-A2 to 015"-C2.
