Some Variables Affecting the Adhesion Test Results of Spray-able, Strippable, Adhering Vinyl Films

The adhesion test in Specification MIL-B-12121B was investigated, using qualified formulations from two proprietary sources. The effects of formulation, operator, day, and "sag" (film wetness) were all found to be significant. A specimen preparative technique, designed to yield adhesion test specimens of uniform wetness (solvent content) and dry film thickness, is described. The described preparative technique yields improved test results, but does not eliminate all of the observed variation. Further improvement of the test method is needed.
