A Preliminary Survey Of Fuel-Oil Slagging Problem

A study of methods to prevent slag formation in the boilers of Navy vessels and the determination of a quick and economic means of removal when such formation does occur was initiated at NRL through the Office of Naval Research on the request of Bureau of Ships.nThis type of slag formation, primarily a Navy problem, differs from that found on merchant vessels and land-based installations. Navy power-plant design permits much closer spacing of boiler tubes and a much greater heat release per cubic foot of furnace volume than is found in other types of steam-power generating units. This fact alone makes the accumulation of boiler deposits on the tubes a much more serious problem than is generally realized.
