EFFECTS OF LEAD ADDITION ON THE LATHE CUTTING PROCESS

To determine the effect of lead addition in alloy steel upon the metal cutting process.nOrthogonal (two dimensional) data from RPL 23/6 and chip photomicro¬graphs were used to investigate several theories (including lubrication and change in the number of active shear planes) for the effects of leaded steel. A machining temperature analysis was performed to describe those conditions where lead does affect the cutting mechanism. In addition, a machining cost analysis is presented to determine when the use of leaded steel is economically advantageous.
