The role of the human in most control tasks is to detect information regarding some aspect of his environment, process this information in some manner, and transmit it in whole or in part to some response agency which effects appropriate adjustments in the environment.nThe review will be organized in terms of classes of relevant variables which appear to group themselves together in one or another logical fashion. In each case, the distinguishing characteristic(s) of the class will be described briefly prior to the discussion of the individual variables. It should be recognized that this scheme of classification is for convenience in discussion and does not imply any distinct practical or theoretical division among the variables concerned.
