Project Mohole-Phase II. Design Report. Drillpipe Endurance Testing Machine

The engineering design presented here is contingent upon and determinative to several aspects other than the mechanics of the machine proper. Those factors which prescribe the form of the machine are derived from the anticipated conditions of drilling operations, while the economics and procedures of testing are dictated by the capabilities designed into the unit. To project the machine as an integral part of the whole program, this report is divided into five sections of text and an Appendix containing detailed computations and drawings. Section 1 is devoted to the determination, evaluation, and classification of those conditions pertinent to drill-pipe which will be obtained during drilling of Mohole. In Section 2, rational methods of simulating the working loads and environments are evolved to establish the broad design criteria of the program. Third, the machine required to meet the needs of the established program must be completely engineered. The text of Section 3 contains only the general method of design, but complete engineering computations and drawings are contained in the Appendix. Section 4 is a brief summary of estimated construction cost of the machine. The operational procedures for testing drill-pipe are delineated in Section 5, only as pertains to machine use. The magnitude of testing to be undertaken is beyond the scope of this report. (Author)
