Barr noted that these diffusion flames could vibrate at a low frequency both in the axial mode and, apparently, in other complex modes. By postulating a "combustion time", Barr was able to account for the departure of the observed flame shape from the sinusoidal fluctuation of the fuel flow at the tip of the fuel tube during a cycle of vibration. Barr's hypothesis was not tested at the time since empirical values could not be assigned to his concept of "combustion time".nThis paper summarizes the results of an investigation into axially symmetrical laminar self excited diffusion flames vibrating in the axial mode.
