Future Trends in the Design of Continuous Pusher Furnaces for the Hot Strip Mill

The evolution of continuous 'pusher' slab reheating furnaces is briefly described and the limitations of present 5-zone designs are indicated. An appreciation is made of the design requirements for integration of the furnace with the modern hot strip mill. Proposals are made for a new furnace temperature profile to give high throughput rates. Possible means of achieving this profile are considered and trends in skid, burner and waste heat recuperator designs indicated. (Author)
