Modernization of the pusher-type furnace of the TKS hot strip mill in Bochum

In the hot strip mill of Thyssenkrupp Stahl AG (TKS) in Bochum the existing pusher-type furnace has been revamped within a period of three months from October until December 2000. Reasons for the modernization were the adjustment of the furnace capacity to the capacity of the two further existing walking beam furnaces, the reduction of the exhaustion of nitrogen oxides during the combustion in the furnace, the reduction of energy consumption for the reheating process of the slabs as well as quality improvement of the rolled products by the reduction of skids. The modernization included, among others, expanding the furnace volume and optimization of the cross section of the whole furnace vessel for the homogenization of the soaking of heat into the slabs and the reduction of energy losses, the renewal of the lining with high-quality refractories, new systems for a better pre-heating of air in order to save energy, the installation of top- and end burners for the whole furnace as well as the implementation of a multi-zone furnace control. In the first part of the report are given the modification measures and in the second part the operational results achieved with the new pusher-type furnace, as performance development as well as an explanation of gas and energy consumption.
